CAPE OF GOOD HOPE, 1900

CAPE OF GOOD HOPE, 1900

Great Britain's Queen Victoria Jubilee Issue (1887) overprinted in black "Bechuanaland Protectorate" (1897).  Then in 1900, under the authority of Col. Robert Baden Powell, commander of forces in the town, this forerunner was overprinted "MAFEKING BESIEGED" and surcharged "1d".  Postmarked with May 12 C.D.S.  Six stamps in a row were overprinted and surcharged at the same time by typography.  Each of the six types are separately identifiable.  The used block of twenty-nine is the largest Mafeking block of any value known to exist.
