VIII. THE LABELS

(1)

Although, at least, ten different kinds of labels were produced for and in connection with the Fourth World Jamboree, only one type appears to have experienced actual postally connected use, although others have been found pasted, and even cancelled, indiscriminately on the front or rear of Jamboree posted envelopes and cards.

This type, intended specifically for use on mail carried by the special Scout air mail service, showed a biplane flying over billowy clouds, with a Scout emblem in the background.  At the top was the inscription "IV. JAMBOREE", while in a panel at the bottom was "GÖDÖLLŐ 1933 VIII. 1-16." The labels were perforated, measured from border to border, 1 1/4" x 1 3/4", and were printed in red, green, blue and brown in miniature sheets of four per color.  Copies of, at least, the red and brown, however, are known to exist imperforate, and it is presumed that all were also produced in that condition.

Since many of the air mail covers, known to have been carried by the Scout air mail service, do not have any copy of the label affixed, however, it is clear that, although these labels were issued for use in connection with the Scout air service, they were not distributed free and were not pasted on all air mail by postal or Scout authorities.  Instead, it is probable that they were sold for a small price to benefit the Scouts and were attached to letters by the senders themselves as an extra decorative souvenir of the occasion.

One each of these four differently colored labels appear on special souvenir cards, either numbered or unnumbered, and franked with an oval-shaped violet hand-shaped cachet reading in Hungarian "Gödöllő to Mátyásföld (or 'to Budapest') by Scout air mail".  Probably some 200 were issued.  The cards, usually measuring 4 1/2" x 5 3/4", are white stock with black printing wording at the top signifying the IV World Jamboree event and at the bottom, in four languages, the wording "In memory of the First Boy Scout Air Mail".

Moreover, a very special souvenir sheet, of which only 20 numbered copies were produced, is known.  Measuring 7" x 9 3/4", each differently colored label thereon as aforesaid is individually cancelled with one of the four differently colored airmail cachets, while the official Jamboree postmark, with the letter "b" is in the center.  The top of the white stock sheet reveals two lines of black print:  "IV VILÁGJAMBOREE/ GÖDÖLLŐ-BUDAPEST -- BUDAPEST-GÖDÖLLŐ", while the black print inscription at the bottom in Hungarian confirms the fact that only 20 of these souvenir sheets were issued for experimental purposes.  Even more interesting, each sheet contains the signature "Baden-Powell, Chief Scout" and was presented to a distinguished guest at a special reception.
